Tool is an American rock band often associated with progressive metal, which have been practicing since its inception in the 90's. However, this definition falls short when talking about this band. The group year after year has shown a constant evolution as musicians and have managed to impress with ever more ambitious projects, from his incredible Ænima in 96 the band was working for 5 years to achieve this record:

Lateralus Tool's music is governed by a very raw and dark sound that leads the listener from powerful passages where the bass stand out, the distorted guitars come and mingle metric with countless variations of the battery to quiet and cautious musical scenes where ambient sounds do their part. All this added to the virtuous voice of Maynard Keenan (one of my favorite musicians).

The album on the other hand does the job of using (at that time and from there to this day) both sound and visual environment, it is essential to have to see the band live (if possible) or any of his videos to hear his music. Interestingly enough for those who like to investigate, for this album the band bordered with the Fibonacci sequence and golden sections. One need only listen carefully and measure some things hidden within the songs, here a reference link to be in a little bit on the subject:

It might be one of the few works to bring this to the music, so there you go. Download with confidence as it is an excellent album (speaking as an objective listener.) Strongly recommended and one of the best jewels of the band (speaking as a fan)

Musicians
Maynard James Keenan - vocals, electronic keyboards
Adam Jones - guitar
Justin Chancellor - bass
Danny Carey - drums
