I welcome to this blog's music with such a great album that costs out of the CD player, MP3 or iPod, as appropriate. This is Perdition City (music to a film inside) published in 2000 by the Norwegian band Ulver. And to fill the space before the link will take you to what matters (the album download) let us start with the basics.
Ulver's story begins in the dark and raucous black metal genre, and not just any band, but they keep a place of prestige and great influence in this style. To the uninitiated in this underworld, one can say that black is characterized by the letters alluding topics as dark powers, the savage force of primordial nature and especially the issue satanic, anti-Christian, Wiccan, ien of beliefs and customs pagan countries of northern Europe, and so on. In the audible, the classic lineup are two guitars, bass and drums, lightning fast tempos predominantly based on double bass drums. I do not think it is necessary to explain that it is metal, would only add the fast tempos and the production deliberately sloppy record publishing.
In any case, the public record that this time there is nothing black, or at least not the obvious, because another thing that characterizes this genre is something that transcends party and that cuts across cultures of the Netherlands and to a large extent could be attributed to climate, especially the way the sun hits q their heads and covered their forests and rivers. I mean a kind of melancholy and nostalgia that permeates all his art and even way of seeing things. Some introversion that my hand was many bands and albums in particular, but never as pure as the amazing record
"Kveldsanger" (95) , the band that motivates this article. This is an engraved plaque in the heart of the forest with all the mystique and solemnity characteristic of acoustic instruments like guitars, cellos, flutes and especially the impressive and exciting clean male voice, without any trace of the characteristics of black voices, or the effects that one might imagine for one of those singers.
This was the first album I heard of Ulver, fully recommend it especially for those autumn evenings when the sound of the wind that blows through the window invites us to silence, contemplation and dreaming.
After this album, had a return to black, but I went long and I went directly to investigate the sounds that Ulver was experiencing.
Well, it turns out that the wolves continued to evolve and finding their sound, and surprisingly reached after passing through the black and the "folk", the use of digital instruments such as synthesizers, samplers and what not, all would use any electronic band, triphop and industrial. This
this time are three disks, Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, and the long-term Metamorphosis Perdition City.
Now, I have said that their instruments and experiments are similar in style to electronic and industrial, but not this be a lie, I must say that at least it is a poor description for the results obtained by Ulver. The difficulty in describing this period is that, although its history and makes it clear that this is not a traditional ensemble, the words fall short unless we take the license to speak on non-musical terms to characterize them. If a good friend asked me and ask me to say that they are describing is unique, that achieve a balanced mix between the sounds "modern" electronics but shady screened with metal, undoubtedly generated atmospheres can relate to the dream and the dream, besides being perfect to accompany the other activities that are effected in bed and that their compositions are so smart and careful, the sound of Ulver has nothing to envy to silence.
But do not anticipate, because after these records, the wolves have continued their journey, so just leave it up to here, at least for today so that those who read this and give you click the link below, use the time to listen and digest with quiet textures and rhythms of this great band. So fewer letters and more sounds:
